Library Activities
attracting users towards Library
The main objectives of school library are to
facilitate optimal use of knowledge by
students and staff and to encourage the
reading habit of students and staff members.
Library activities play a vital role to attract the
students towards the library to fulfill its
objectives. Here some activities are being
suggested which may be conducted in
Libraries .
1. Book Review
• Students should be told to write the review of
the books they read. The best reviews may be
read during morning assembly on a prescribed
day.
2. Clipping File Preparation
• Groups of students can be made for collecting
a specific information from news papers,
magazines and from any other resources to
prepare clipping file.
3. Green Day Celebration
*To promote reduce, reuse and recycle theory,
every Library should organise Green Day on the
very first day of academic session. Students should
be motivated to gift their books to the students of
next batch.
4. Quiz Competition
• Quiz competition may be organized time to
time. Quiz may include GK quiz, book quiz,
quiz on eminent personalities etc.
5. Book Fair
• Book Fair should be organised by any external
agency like NBT, CBT, local book vendor etc
6. Book Exhibition
* Book exhibition should be organised in the
library regularly on special occasions, eg. – Hindi
book exhibition may be organised during “Hindi
Pakhwada”, sanskrit books should be exhibited
during Sanskrit week, books on Premchand may
be exhibited on the birthday of Premchand etc.
7. Book Week celebration
• The week-long event is an annual celebration
of books written for young people, and hopes
to inspire a love of reading. Schools, libraries,
and communities across the country host
numerous events and activities that connect
readers with books and celebrate the joy of
reading.
8. DEAR day celebration
• Drop Everything And Read
(DEAR) day may be
celebrated to motivate the students to read
the books.
9. Story Telling
• It’s and excellent way to engage young
students and introduce them to the pleasure
of reading.
10. Debate on renowned characters
• Such types of activities inspire the young
students to read about the characters.
11. Best Reader Award
• The best reader award may be announced on
Annual function every year which will inspire
the other students to become a good reader.
12. Birthday celebration of renowned
authors
• This activity will inspire the students to know
about the works of those authors.
13. Meet the authors
Famous authors may be invited to meet the
students and to deliver a speech to inspire
the children to read their works.
14. Visit of Local Librar
y
• A visit of local library should be arranged for
students to make them aware of other library
services.
15. Preparation of wall magazine
• A wall magazine is a periodical run on a notice
board, especially in an educational institute
where the students and other members of the
institution can post their articles, poems,
drawings and other such compositions to
share with each other. They can be in the form
of collage giving a message.
16. Inspiring Talks
• This activity may be done with the help of
videos, slides etc. regarding personality
development, self confidence, honesty, truth
etc.
17. Important day celebration
Some important days like – Librarian’s day,
Independence day, Republic day, Children’s
day, Youth day, Women’s day, Teacher’s day,
birth anniversaries of famous personalities
like- Mahatma Gandhi etc may be celebrated
by providing the related books, magazines to
the students.
18. National Library week celebration
• ILA Indian library Association declared 14th
November as National Library Day, Since 1968,
14-20 November has been celebrated as
National Library week all over India and
various programmes are organised to let the
public know about the libraries. Some
activities like poster making, book jacket ,
book mark designing, poem recitation may be
conducted during this week.
19. Library News Letter
• Library newsletter makes it easy for the
students to stay upto-date on events,
programmes, services, new arrivals in the
library. News letter may be published on
monthly, quarterly basis.
20. Book of the Month
• This activity plays a vital role to highlight a
book among students. The book will inspire
other students to read it.
21. Slogan Writing
• Slogan writing competition may be oraganised
on Positive attitude, Truth, Education, Books,
Libraries etc issues.
22. Know your Library
• This programme may be organised for the
students of Primary classes and for class VI. This
may be treated as an orientation programme.
The main objective of the user orientation is to
introduce the library facilities, resources, services
and library techniques to the users.
The orientation programme makes the users to
familiarize to the resources and increases the use
of library.
23. Summer Reading Challenge
• The Summer Reading Challenge takes place
every year during the summer holidays.
Students can sign up at their local library, then
read six library books of their choice.
24. Awareness and Volunteer Activities
• Choose an important social issue such as Child
labour every month and hold an awareness
event. Select relevant books and ask a teacher
or famous local personality to talk in the
school library.
25. News and Views
• This activity helps students to understand and
analyse a news story from different view
point.
26. G.K. Hunt
• Students will find general knowledge bits from
the news papers of the day. They shall be
divided in to groups and each group will scan
one news paper. These general knowledge
questions will be asked in morning assembly.
27. Word of the Day
• Students will find difficult/ new word from the
newspaper. The word will be displayed on the
library news board with its meaning.
28. Library Blogging
• As an activity students may be told to write
their book reviews on library blog.
Photographs of the best readers, best books,
best book reviews, reading room, library
cornors should be included in library blog.
